Chapter 1: Maddox, the Privileged Child
Some people enjoy quiet, simple lives. Some strive to have an adventurous, or complicated life. Some people are smack dab in the middle, Maddox and his family fit this category. Now, I’m not trying to recite lyrics of a country-rock song that doesn’t exist (Try singing those first few lines in a country-rock style, I dare you), but I am trying to get across that the Bigby’s fit in what Maddox’s parents describe as a “normal family”.
“Try dysfunctional”, Maddox always thought to himself, not truly knowing what it meant. As a reader you might assume that Maddox is the protagonist, and by assuming this you are correct. Maddox Bigby, the 10 year old local “weirdo” according to the people of Greensburgborotonville City, Colorado. Maddox, to the majority of society’s standards would be considered an average kid. He played basketball, golf, and baseball, he played Fortnite, he listened to pop and hip hop, so what could make him so different from other kids (in 2018)? Let’s start at the beginning, the most recent place he has lived.
*BING BING BING BING BING BING BING BING BING BING BING*
Maddox, consumed by the warmth of his blue-striped comforter, suddenly jolted upright at the sound of his alarm clock. Even though his hand was still concealed, he pulled his blanket off with it and tapped buttons until he found the one marked, “SLEEP”. His peace wasn’t existent for long, because a 2 foot tall beast hurled towards his bed at an amazing speed, and extended its moist tongue onto Maddox’s face, removing his dried tears from the prior night. The beast continued licking Maddox until he lifted his head, and immediately noticed that heavy feeling your head has when you first lift it. “The Beast” of course, was his dog, whom his Dad named Rogue after his favorite “X-Men” member from “Marvel”. Rogue awkwardly jumped off of Maddox’s bed as he slowly slipped out and layed on the floor. After about another 5 minutes of Rogue whining for him to get up and take her out, he finally gave into it and rubbed his round, blue eyes, as he left his colorful room that was filled to the brim with sport team logos, posters, and a pile of comics laying on the ground. He figured he’d procrastinate the inevitable for just a little while, by packing up the rest of his things.
“God I’m spoiled,” he said out loud, probably a little too loud because his Mom suddenly stopped in her tracks as she was walking past his room. She rolled her eyes and started walking again. Maddox has his own bathroom right next to his room, it was a pretty nice size as well. He reached over for his comb and started humming “Lucid Dreams” as he combed his dirty blonde hair in front of his mirror that covered a whole wall in his bathroom. By the end of his humming/combing session, his hair was back to its old curly self. He examined himself in the mirror, as if to make sure he had the same oblong-shaped face, the same cleft chin, the thin yet arched eyebrows, the same slightly hooked nose, and that look in his round eyes that makes him look sensitive, yet sophisticated, which of course made girls at school go crazy over him. Life was good for Maddox Bigby, not perfect, but nevertheless pretty darn amazing. That of course was about to change, and he will realize just how good he had it. All of a sudden he remembered that he was supposed to take Rogue out!
“Crap! She’s probably already frickin’ peed in the house,” he said as he rushed down his polished wooden staircase that led to the kitchen.
“Rogue? Rogue! Come here girl,” he called out in vain. The little boxer scampered towards him with her head low and started breathing excitedly. Her paws, being white were almost invisible in the equally white dining room rug, and Maddox giggled.
“Sheesh Rogue! Thank God you’re the runt of the litter,” he said and immediately said a small prayer to God. He took her out through the back door on a leash and walked her around the massive yard. He sighed as bile started building up in his throat, and a single tear fell down his face. He quickly wiped it away, he didn’t want his neighbors to get a last impression that he’s some crybaby. He gave Rogue some privacy as she did her business and gazed at his former house. Why did his Dad have to be moved to a different hospital again?
Yes, this is a pretty generic story so far. Poor little Maddox is a privileged kid that has to move away, and he’s sad, and must eventually adapt to the changes of wherever he’s moving. What if I told you that I’m not THAT predictable. As Maddox looked at his former house he furrowed his brow. His house looked as if it was aflame… And after a couple minutes this “fire” started spreading, and Maddox started to question his sanity. Rogue started barking and was pulling him with all of her might towards the house, and that’s when he realized that he wasn’t imagining things.
“Wha-what? No no no no no no no!,” he shrieked out of panic as he sprinted across the yard with Rogue to try and see if his parents would be alright. “I’M COMING! I’M COMING! I’M COMING”, he screamed to the top of his lungs as he increased his speed. His words started becoming muffled from the pure shock, that and the sweat, tears, and snot running down his face. Rogue was barking like crazy, and by the time he got to the back door, he could hear what could only be his parent’s plea.
“Where’s Maddox?, his Mom screamed while attempting to make it to the window, only for that part of the ceiling to collapse right in front of it.
“I don’t know! I don’t know!,” he cried out and had a coughing fit right after. Maddox was terrified. He had never ever , not once in the 10 years of his life has he seen his Dad cry, but his Dad was bawling. The door, somehow came how its hinges and was pushed by an unknown force, sending Maddox flying and landing on his back. Rogue rushed into the house in an attempt to rescue her other owners, and Maddox watched in awe as Rogue hopped over the flames, only to be crushed by a chandelier! Maddox started screaming in fury, and attempted to even step foot in the house, but hesitated. After minutes, what seemed like hours to him he froze.
“I c-can’t do i-i-it. I-I physically c-cannot d-do it,” he murmured. As the tears started falling, something that resembled his parents appeared before him. It was, and their bodies looked burnt to a crisp. Their faces were covered in large boils with pus oozing out, and some body parts were completely missing. Your Mom’s scalp was drooping across the side of her head like a circus clown’s hat, and your father kneecaps were poking out.
“Mom, Dad?,” he asked as his lips quivered.
“Son, it’s all your fault,” his father said in a grave voice.
“We believed in you,” his Mom said shedding a single tear.
“I-I’m so sorry I just… I was just… just terrified!”
“Scared enough to not go in after your family? We have done everything for you! And you repay us with- with this?”
“Honey, it’s fine. Let’s just leave him and let him try to live on his own.”
“No-no! I’m sorry, y-y-y-ou c-can’t do th-this to me,” He tried running in the house, arms out for an embrace. Just as he made contact with his Mother, his Father picked him up by his neck.
“No son of mine would have let this happen,” he said as he tightened his grip. “You! You are dead to me,” He howled in fury. Maddox held onto his Father’s arms, trying to pull away. Maddox struggled and held onto life as his own Father tightened his grip even further. Maddox looked into his Father’s eyes as one last attempt to plea for mercy, but all he saw was a fire. A literal fire burning in his eyes, trying to go out as if to escape life. Try as it might, the fire only got stronger and stronger. Maddox used the last of his breath to let out one final scream. A scream so ghostly, he himself had no idea he was capable of such a bellow. As his eyes closed, his body slowly became lifeless and drifted off.
When Maddox opened his eyes he was in a dark abyss. Just then, out of thin air a themometer and a flashlight appeared. He picked up the flashlight off of the ground and found the button to turn it on. When the flashlight turned on he could see what the ground was made of. The ground was his room. He picked up the themometer and examined its cylindrical shape. He suddenly started feeling ice cold and not only see his own breath, but feel it. The temperature kept decreasing, and Maddox just stood there. What would become of him was unpredictable, and Maddox was fine with that. After the experience he just witnessed, all he wants to do is lie down, go to sleep and never wake up again.
Chapter 2: That Boring “Introduce the Parents” Chapter
When Maddox awoke, his eyes were wide open, and a tall, chubby man looked over at him at the edge of a comfortable bed. Maddox stared at the figure looming over him, … from his buzz cut down to his goatee he looked familiar.
“Maddox? Are you alright? You’ve been tossing and turning in your bed for over an hour now,” the man said. His voice was also familiar, and so deep yet soothing to listen to. Maddox then recognized him, it was his Father!
“D-dad? Man, I had the weirdest dream,” Maddox said almost apologetically. He noticed sweat trickling down his Father’s forehead as his Father gave him the gentle smile, he absorbed its warmth and the adrenaline calmed down.
“Hey! Glad you’re back to reality! Was it another nightmare? You had me kinda worried,” his Dad said as Maddox observed his surroundings. Maddox zoned out, noticing how he wasn’t in his bed. He was in a white double bed, designed for- you guessed it, two people! His eyes darted toward another double bed right next to his, with the same white cloth blanket, and his Mom lying in it, fast asleep. Directly horizontal from the bed was a window that peeked outside. In front of the beds was a short, wooden tv stand with- you guessed it, a tv! Next to the tv stand was a mini fridge that was left opened, but was empty. On the left of the beds was a small hallway that had a door to a bathroom, a closet, and a door that led to elsewhere.
“Ummm, Earth to Maddox? Thanos is coming! *Snap Snap*,” his Dad said waving his hands in the air, all while including a not so subtle reference.
“Ehhh, I’d be more excited if Lebron James or Kevin Durant knocked on the door.”
“What about Kawhi Leonard? Is he a “lit” as you kids refer to it as?”
“Wait, you actually know who that is? Am I still dreaming?”
“Ha ha, very funny. Speaking of your dream, what happened. You seemed pretty shaken even when you woke up!”
“Well, the scary part was that you said that I wasn’t your son and followed with choking me to death,” Maddox said forcing out a chuckle to not hurt his Dad’s feelings. His Dad looked at him like he was insane, and Maddox started blushing. It must have been noticeable because he quickly changed his expression to a forced smile and started laughing with him. There was a long, awkward pause afterwards. His Dad broke the silence; “So, have you noticed that we’re in a hotel?”
“I was wondering where we were…”
“Yeah, you were so tired last night that I had to lift you up on my shoulders and carry you to the room!”
“Dad! Did anyone see my face? You should have just woken me up!”
“Relax! The only person that saw you was your mother and I.”
“Well thanks Dad. When are we going to hit the road again,” Maddox asked with a scowl.
“As soon as your Mother wakes up. I’m letting her sleep in because it’s her turn to drive today. Speaking of which, you need to pack up your stuff.”
Maddox nodded and lazily rolled off off the bed. He was exhausted, but something made him still crave running around the room to let out some of his seemingly endless energy. He walked over to his black duffel bag that had his initials, MOB. He unzipped it and changed into a UNC Tar Heels t-shirt and some Under Armor shorts. He threw his dirty clothes in a plastic Walmart bag, and put that in his duffel bag. As he was moving towards the bathroom to brush his teeth, he glanced at his Dad as if to make sure he was still there. He sighed, and brushed his teeth.
“Hey Dad?”
“What’s up?”
“Is there a Little League Baseball, or Basketball team where we’re moving?”
“I’ve told you, this town has everything! I have tickets to watch Sumo Wrestling in their Sumo Arena!”
“I love you, but you’re kinda weird Dad,” Maddox teased, holding back a smirk.
“I have deep respect and affection towards you as well, but you’re kinda coming with me,” His Dad teased back, as he reached in his bag and pulled out two silver tickets with two sumos and a date.
“Seriously?”
“No! Your Mother wanted to come when I told her about it, so the other ticket is for her. Isn’t that “lit” as you kids refer to it as?”
“That’s the second time you’ve said that today Dad.”
“And it won’t be the last- probably.”
“Ugh… That’s great Dad. Can we just wake Mom up?”
“B-but, Maddox… I don’t feel so good…”
“Dad? Are you okay,” Maddox asked as his Dad fell to the floor, clutching his chest.
“I don’t wanna go, I don’t wanna go!”
“Wow! Dad you scared me! I thought you were having a heart attack or something when you fell to the floor! God Dad don’t do that!”
“I’m sorry,” His Dad said dramatically, closing his eyes. By now Maddox couldn’t even contain himself and burst out laughing. His Dad opened his eyes, hugged him and joined his laughter. Apparently their rambunctious actions were too loud, because his Mom was a heavy sleeper, and even this woke her up.
Maddox’s Mom was gorgeous, inside and out. Even with her slightly ruffled, long, dirty blonde hair she was “absolutely stunning” as Maddox’s Dad put it. She had the same oblong face, and curly hair as Maddox. The only difference with her facial features was a small, cute Greek nose. She was ever so slightly tanned as a result of her Greek heritage, but that Greek was mixed with Irish, Austrian, and Scottish blood. She was tall, not as tall as his Dad but still tall, and like his Dad, slightly chubby.
“Hey my dudes,” she said rubbing her eyes.
“Ms. Lauralee! Boy I missed you,” his Father said in a gentle tone, all while stroking her hair.
“What time is it honey,” she said accepting his embrace.
“About 10:30 a.m.”
“Holy feces! You should have woken me up sooner!”
“Relax, we have plenty of time. I wanted to let you sleep in. When your ready to go just say so, I’ve packed your bag for you.
“Okay, just let me go get ready,” she as she walked up to Maddox and kissed him on the forehead.
While the conversation was going on between Maddox’s parents, he decided to pull out his iPad and help himself to the hotel’s free wifi. When his Mom came up and kissed him, he didn’t care that that had caused him to lose his game. He loved his parents more than anything in the world. To think that he wasn’t brave enough to save them in his nightmare makes guilt and anxiety creep up his spine. Maddox knew it would take her about an hour minutes to take a shower, use the restroom, put on makeup, do her hair, and get dressed, so he continued on with his games while his Dad went to the gym to workout. By the time his Dad got back, his Mom had just finished taking a shower. She came out of the bathroom in a red, white, and blue t-shirt that had some kind of Cartoon Lobster frowning while saying “Does Someone Need a Doctor?” from this show called “Futurama” (Maddox wasn’t allowed to watch Futurama yet so he always wondered what the appeal was to this show), and ripped jeans.
“Mom! Why do you have to wear those weird shirts?”
“They’re quirky, which is why I like them.”
“Do you like embarrassing me?”
“In all honesty, I kinda do,” she said as she embraced Maddox. Maddox accepted it even though he was a little frustrated with his Mom. His Dad came out of the shower wearing an orange martial arts t-shirt with some kind of japanese symbol on the front and back. He wore matching shorts, minus the Japanese symbols.
“It’s beyond me that what some 42 year-olds wear,” Maddox said sarcastically with a tint of ignorance.
“Actually your Mother is 41.”
“He’s right you know, in High School I was the first in my grade to date someone that was a grade above.”
“Ugh… can we just leave now?”
“I’m ready when you are,” his Mother said to counter his sarcasm.
